For me, time didn't change anything. I really love the books and I loved the show until things started to make no sense and the show was then, in the end, ruined completely. Of course some scenes were spectacular, but the overall anticipation and excitement I always felt when watching a new episode were gone.
The Audiobooks are great. I read through books 1-3, but once I got a job it became difficult to find time to actually sit down and read a few chapters. Assuming you read the books I just personally can't see that, sure most of its because of D&D's embarrassing writing, but he's way too good looking and small in general (Ramsay's a fairly big-fat and pudgy-brute who also has virtually no training in swordsmanship), pretty sure he had a six pack in that one moronic scene
They have changed a lot of things from the books, so it shouldn't be surprising. As far as "actual plot development", they developed Ramsay's character, introduced Reek, and initiated Yara/Asha going to try and rescue Theon. Those seem like actual plot developments to me. GRRM used to write for TV before working on Game of Thrones, so that may have a hand in it becoming one of the best TV shows right now. But I'm sure he wrote the books in the 90s without the intention of making a TV series. He spent a lot of time working on the world itself and the politics of the world and families.
